The SC 81 corridor at I-85 is continuing to experience rapid industrial and residential growth. The County and SCDOT recognize that this has led to safety and capacity issues near the I-85 interchange. To address these issues, the County is proposing a multi-solution approach to improve connectivity and make it safer for drivers to move through the corridor.
Project Highlights
SC 81/I-85 Interchange Improvements
- Widening and lengthening the I-85 southbound exit ramp to SC 81 at Exit 27 to accommodate a dedicated right turn lane and two left turn lanes.
Constructing Orange Way Extension
- Constructing the new location Orange Way Extension from Martin Road to SC 81.
- Installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of the proposed Orange Way Extension, Webb Road and SC 81.
- Adding eastbound left and right turn lanes to existing Orange Way at Martin Road.
Ryobi Drive Safety Improvements
- Removing the left turn lane from Ryobi Drive eastbound at SC 81 and converting to right-out only.

Minimal Right-of-Way Impacts
Most of the proposed project work is anticipated to occur within the existing right-of-way along I-85, SC 81, Martin Road, Ryobi Drive, Webb Road, and Orange Way. An approximate 150-200-foot proposed right-of-way would contain the extension of Orange Way located between Martin Road and SC 81.
